Italy Herculaneum

Herculaneum suffered the same fate as its more famous neighbour Pompei, and arguably this is better preserved, although smaller.

At the time of the devastation this was a seaside town; it now sits several hundred metres from the beach, testament to the huge amounts of ash and ejecta that nearby Mt Vesuvius hurled at the cities lying at its base.

Photography Tips

A wide angle lens is handy as it is not always possible to retreat until your standard lens fits the scene.

Travel Information

Herculaneum lies within the city of Naples so public transport is not a problem.

Be careful of parking fees, we were caught out by listening to someone who we thought was an employee but worked at the cafe next door. He was sitting on a chair at the boom gate so you can appreciate our mistake!
