Italy Highland Cattles
On the left side of the trail to Lago di Pian Palù, a group of around 20 Highland cattle adds an unexpected and striking visual contrast to the alpine scenery. With their long shaggy coats and impressive horns, they blend beautifully into the rugged mountain backdrop — creating a scene that feels wild, peaceful, and incredibly photogenic. Whether standing still or grazing among larches and rock formations, they perfectly complete the alpine atmosphere.
Photography Tips
Bring a zoom lens (70–200mm or more) to capture detailed portraits without disturbing the animals. Shoot from a lower angle to frame the cattle against the peaks and sky. In autumn, the warm tones of the trees enhance the reddish fur. Early morning or late afternoon light creates soft shadows and adds drama to the mountain landscape. Always keep a respectful distance.
Travel Information
The Highland cattle can usually be seen about halfway up the trail from Peio Fonti to Lago di Pian Palù. The hike is easy to moderate and takes around 1–1.5 hours. You’ll find the cattle grazing freely near the path — a great spot for a break and some authentic alpine shots. Drone flying is allowed with caution and only at a respectful altitude to avoid disturbing the animals.
