Italy Sacra di San Michele

The Sacra di San Michele evokes beauty, charm, and mystery. That mystery has surrounded it since its construction, between 983 and 987 AD. This imposing abbey, defying the principles of physics, dominates the summit of Mount Pirchiriano, at the entrance to the Susa Valley.

A marvelous place steeped in spirituality, originally guarded by Benedictine monks, it has been entrusted to the Rosminian Fathers since 1837. Its history, spiritual significance, and surrounding landscape inspired writer Umberto Eco's bestseller "The Name of the Rose," making the Sacra a popular destination for visitors from all over Europe.

In this case, a panorama with a half-telephoto lens is recommended, in order to bring the focal planes closer together and highlight the imposing mountains in the background.

Take the A32 Turin-Bardonecchia motorway towards Frejus. Exit at Avigliana Centro.
At the roundabout, follow the signs for Giaveno/Sacra di San Michele and enter the tunnels. Upon exiting the tunnels, take the first exit at the roundabout and continue towards Laghi di Avigliana/Giaveno. At the roundabout, take the second exit towards Giaveno, then follow the signs for Sacra di San Michele. Park at Piazzale Croce Nera. Take the Sentiero dei Principi (Princes' Path) for about 20 minutes until you reach Punta dell'Ancoccia.
