Italy Timmelsjoch, Italy
The Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road is one of the most spectacular mountain routes between Italy and Austria, and in autumn it becomes a world of blazing colors. This drone perspective captures the pass as it winds through dense larch forests turning gold, with a single car tracing the serpentine asphalt. The mix of rugged alpine terrain and warm seasonal tones makes this one of the most atmospheric drives in the region. It’s a place where every curve reveals a new viewpoint—steep valleys, waterfalls, and endless mountain ridges.
Photography Tips
For aerial shots, autumn is unbeatable here. The larches almost glow from above, especially if you fly in the late afternoon when the low sun enhances the contrast between yellow foliage and the dark evergreens. Try flying directly overhead to emphasize the winding S-curves of the road and any cars passing through—this adds scale and a storytelling element. If you’re shooting with a drone, watch the wind; the pass can get gusty. Polarizing filters also help reduce glare on the asphalt and bring out richer colors in the trees.
Travel Information
The Timmelsjoch (Passo del Rombo) connects South Tyrol with Austria’s Ötztal and is typically open from June to late October, depending on snowfall. The road is steep, narrow, and incredibly scenic—perfect for a road trip, motorcycle tour, or cycling adventure. There are several viewpoints and small pull-offs along the way where you can safely park before exploring with your camera. Since weather changes quickly at high altitude, bring warm layers even on sunny days. If you're visiting in autumn, aim for late September to mid-October when the larches are at peak color.
