Takachiho Gorge is a beautiful small and around 200 meters long rock face formation near the village Takachiho. The nearly sheer cliffs lining the gorge are made of volcanic basalt columns which resemble the scales of a dragon where the stone twisted and flowed as it formed.
Inside the gorge is the Minainotaki waterfall, which is 17 meters high and falls into the gorge.

Photography Tips

Attention: This is not a morning or evening spot, even if it's less crowded. The best light inside the gorge and on the waterfall is around the early midday plus minus three hours depending on the time of the year. So check apps like "PhotoPills" before.

This gorge is super crowded with Japanese people. So be aware and patient until a lonely boot is next to the waterfall. Take your time, it is not easy!

Travel Information

You can reach the gorge with your individual car or with a tour. I would recommend a rental car. You are way much more flexible and can plan your trip during the best light conditions.

For renting a boot you can book it online or directly at the information center for the day itself.
