This hidden grotto is dedicated to Fudo Myo-o, the wrathful manifestation of Vairocana, the Cosmic Buddha. Fudo Myo-o is strongly associated with waterfalls and ascetic practices that practitioners undertake standing under the force of waterfalls.

Photography Tips

The grotto is surrounded by exquisitely beautiful Japanese maple and bamboo forests that are in full colour in early December.

The trail offers a view of the cable car that takes visitors to and from Iwashimizu Hachimangu, a shrine of national significance in Japan.

Travel Information

Parking is available at the nearby train station of Iwashimizu Hachimangu, a station on the Keihan line that runs between Kyoto and Osaka
