Lithuania Ignalina Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant
The Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP), located in Visaginas, Lithuania, was a Soviet-era facility with two RBMK-1500 reactors, the world’s most powerful at 4800 MW thermal output each. Built to supply the Soviet Northwest, Unit 1 began operations in 1983, Unit 2 in 1987. Due to design flaws akin to Chernobyl’s, Lithuania agreed to decommission it upon EU accession, closing Unit 1 in 2004 and Unit 2 in 2009. Decommissioning, costing €3.4 billion, continues until 2038. INPP powered 70% of Lithuania’s electricity, leaving a lasting legacy now explored through atomic tourism.
