Luxembourg Castle Bourscheid
Bourscheid Castle in Luxembourg is not only the largest building of its kind in the country, but also one of the most important castles between the Rhine and Meuse. It was extended in four stages and completed in 1430 with the construction of the large complex with its numerous turrets.
Bourscheid Castle (Château de Bourscheid) in northern Luxembourg, perched dramatically above the Sûre River valley. The medieval fortress, dating back to the 10th century, dominates the surrounding landscape with its towers and walls rising from the forested hills. As the daylight fades, the castle’s warm lights begin to glow, creating a beautiful contrast against the cool tones of dusk and the green valleys stretching into the distance. It’s a scene that perfectly blends history, architecture, and nature — an icon of the Éislek (Oesling) region.

Photography Tips
A drone offers the best perspective to capture the full scale of Bourscheid Castle and its stunning hilltop location. The most magical light appears during blue hour or late sunset, when the castle lights turn on and the surrounding forest still holds traces of natural color. Framing the nearby winding road adds a dynamic leading line that draws the viewer’s eye toward the fortress. Use bracketed exposures (AEB) to balance the glowing castle lights with the darker valley tones. Early morning flights can also offer misty, atmospheric conditions that enhance the fairytale look of the scene.
Travel Information
Bourscheid Castle is located between Ettelbruck and Esch-sur-Sûre in northern Luxembourg. The site is open to visitors year-round, with parking available near the entrance and a short uphill walk to reach the castle. From ground level, the views are already impressive, but nearby roads and hiking paths offer several elevated vantage points perfect for photography. Drone flights are generally allowed outside the immediate castle grounds — ensure you follow Luxembourg’s UAV regulations and keep a safe distance. The surrounding region offers other beautiful spots such as the Sûre River bends and Dirbach Valley, making it ideal for a day of exploration and landscape photography.
