Macedonia Ohrid Lake view, Ohrid

The Church of St. John at Kaneo is probably Ohrid's most iconic landmark, sitting on a rocky promontory directly above Lake Ohrid. The medieval church dates to the 13th century and is part of Ohrid's extraordinary cultural landscape.

While most photographers concentrate on the classic view of the church itself, the grounds around it offer several beautiful views across the lake. This composition looks through the tall trees beside the church, naturally framing the water, distant mountains, and small boats below.

I took this photo around sunset, when the last warm light was hitting the mountains on the opposite side of Lake Ohrid. Instead of photographing the famous church again, I looked for smaller compositions around the grounds and used the two dark trees as a natural frame.

A standard or short telephoto focal length works particularly well here. Wait for one of the small boats to move into the open water between the trees—it adds a tiny but important focal point and gives the enormous lake some sense of scale.

Expose for the bright lake and mountains, and let the trees become almost completely dark. This creates much stronger separation and emphasizes the natural frame.

St. John at Kaneo is located just outside the core of Ohrid Old Town and is best reached on foot. A particularly scenic approach follows the lakeside boardwalk past Potpesh Beach, then climbs the steps toward the church. From the Old Town, allow roughly 15–20 minutes depending on your starting point.

For photography, I recommend arriving well before sunset. This gives you enough time to photograph the classic elevated view of the church before exploring the grounds for less obvious compositions like this one. You can also combine the location with Plaošnik and Samuel’s Fortress on a longer walk through the upper part of Ohrid.
