Malta Ta' Marija Cave, Malta

Hidden along the rugged coastline near Ġnejna Bay, Ta’ Marija Cave is one of Malta’s more adventurous coastal photography locations. Unlike the island’s famous viewpoints, reaching this enormous sea cave requires considerably more effort—many visitors approach it from the water by kayak, while reaching it on foot involves a challenging route across steep and sometimes slippery terrain. Don't try to go here when it's too wavy, or the tide is too high!

What makes the cave particularly impressive is its enormous natural opening towards the Mediterranean. Standing inside feels almost like looking through a gigantic window carved into the limestone, with the dark interior creating a natural frame around the sea.

Sunset is the moment I would aim for here. Shooting from deep inside the cave toward the entrance lets you use the rock walls as a natural frame, while the remaining light illuminates parts of the limestone.

Adding a person works especially well in a composition like this. The small silhouette immediately communicates the scale of the cave, while positioning the subject against the brighter ocean keeps them clearly separated from the dark surroundings.

The extreme difference between the dark cave and bright sky can be challenging. Expose primarily for the sunset and highlights outside the cave, then recover some information from the shadows afterward. A wide-angle lens also helps emphasize the huge arch surrounding the comparatively tiny subject.

Ta’ Marija Cave lies on the Mġarr coastline near Ġnejna Bay. Although it can be reached on foot, the approach is difficult enough that kayaking is a popular alternative. The final sections on land can involve steep, slippery terrain, and entering the cave itself depends heavily on sea conditions.

That last point is particularly important here: do not treat this as a normal coastal viewpoint. Three trekkers had to be rescued from the Ta’ Marija Cave area in June 2026 after becoming stranded, so checking swell, wind, and conditions before attempting the route is essential.

For photography, though, when the conditions line up, the combination of the gigantic cave entrance, Mediterranean horizon,n and sunset makes Ta’ Marija one of the most atmospheric coastal locations I photographed in Malta.
