Mauritius Underwater Waterfall, Le Morne

Seen from above, the “Underwater Waterfall” illusion near Le Morne Brabant in Mauritius is one of the island’s most captivating natural spectacles. This stunning optical illusion is created by ocean currents pulling sand and silt down the seafloor, making it appear as if a waterfall is plunging into the deeper turquoise lagoon. Framed by the lush Le Morne mountain and the contrasting blues of the Indian Ocean, this surreal scene can only be fully appreciated from the air and is impressive and iconic.

Photography Tips

This unique scene can only be fully captured from the air, either by helicopter or drone, to appreciate the depth and perspective of the underwater waterfall illusion. Helicopter flights offer great views, but are usually not available at sunrise or sunset, so you’ll need to work with midday light, which can still work well thanks to the vibrant ocean hues and clear skies that highlight the layered blues and greens. When photographing from a helicopter, secure your camera tightly with a strap. The illusion itself can vary in intensity depending on wind and current strength.

If using a drone, choose a time outside the helicopter flight schedule. Be extremely mindful of wind conditions—this area has some of the strongest winds on the island and is popular with windsurfers. Check wind speeds and directions carefully, as they affect both your flight distance and control. Only attempt this long-range flight with a powerful drone, and aim high enough to capture the coastal curve and dramatic backdrop of Le Morne for the full visual impact. Drone photography is legal in Mauritius but requires registration and permission from the local Civil Aviation Authority, especially when flying near populated or protected areas.
