Ananda Temple is possibly the largest of the thousands of Buddhist temples, pagodas, and stupas in Bagan. It was originally built in the early 1100s in a cross formation with a large gold standing Buddha facing in each direction of the compass. It has been continually restored and renovated over the years. Major work was needed after an earthquake in 1975. The paintwork is also preserved and there are generous amounts of gold paint on the hundreds of figures throughout the building.

It was designed to be cool, so if you’re looking for a photo opportunity on a really hot day, this place might suit you.

Photography Tips

I was there is 2015 and didn’t have a tripod that day. You might be able to take a tripod in with you. A 16-35mm lens will capture a lot of the interior reasonably, just remove the noise later.
