Lake Inle, a freshwater lake in Shan State in Myanmar, is known for its one-legged rowers and floating villages and gardens. It is the second largest lake in Myanmar.
The houses of the 17 villages are mainly built on stilts. Many of the vegetable, fruit and flower crops are cultivated on floating fields. The life of the people is completely focused on the lake.
The locomotion in the narrow canals of the villages, in the fields and near the shore is done in narrow canoes. Typical for the lake is the one-legged rowing technique used here. The rower stands at the stern of the boat. The hands are needed when fishing, so that only the leg is used for rowing.
For long distances on the lake, however, only the larger boats with an outboard motor are allowed today.
