Namibia Abandoned Railway Station near Lüderitz
Grasplatz is a disused railway station in southern Namibia on today's disused Aus-Lüderitz line. It was here that railwayman Zacharias Lewala found the first diamond in German South-West Africa in 1908 and handed it over to his foreman August Stauch. Stauch's subsequent investigation triggered a diamond rush.
The site was originally called the Grass Dump because before the railway was in place, alfalfa was stored here to feed oxen before the ox wagons set off across the waterless Namib.
