On the banks of the Dommel, overlooking the fields and the old core of Sint-Oedenrode, is the Knoptoren. Already before the year 1000 there was a wooden chapel on this spot: around 1400 a brick church arose. A few decades later, a tower was built on the church: the Sint-Maartenskerk was given shape.
In 1800, the knob of the tower fell through the roof of the church. The knob was replaced by a lantern in 1806 and two years later a new church was built on the foundations of the destroyed church for the Protestants, the current Knoptorenkerk. The walls of the old Sint-Maartenskerk have since formed the wall of the church garden. Through the financial support of Lodewijk Napoleon, the Knoptorenkerk became one of the so-called "Lodewijkskerkjes" in Noord-Brabant.
