The Portuguese Synagogue is a Sephardic Jewish house of worship built in 1675 by members of the Jewish community whose relatives had fled Spain and Portugal.
At the time, it was the largest synagogue in the world. Everything remains the same as it was back then; even the lighting is still provided by candles.
