De Onlanden is een natuur- annex waterbergingsgebied. Een deel ligt in de provincie Drenthe en een klein deel ligt in de provincie Groningen. Het natuurgebied wordt omringd door de dorpen Eelde-Paterswolde, Peize, Roden, Roderwolde, Nietap, Leek en Hoogkerk. Aan de noordoostzijde ligt De Onlanden strak tegen de nieuwe buitenwijken van de stad Groningen aan.
