Very interesting spot with a new quarter of Amsterdam. Many living houses are built on water.

Sluishuis was opened in 2022 after a competition run by the Amsterdam City Corporation, seeking bids for an image defining structure to fit on the small parcel of reclaimed land. The requirement was also for low energy demand. Thus roof-mounted solar panels supply electricity to power the houses, gym, coffee shop and also the little guide lights on the wooden walkway used as a jetty by a lot of impressive old-but-operational barges. The walkway offers you different perspectives for photos from various angles.
The competition was won by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), a consortium of the Danish architect Bjarke Ingels and Dutch firm, Barcode Architects.

Photography Tips

Use the symmetry of the building and if the water is silent you might be able to get great long-exposure photos from this spot. These work extremely well because the building itself has so many details already.

It is possible to access a set of stairs to the top of the building between 12:00 and 4:00 if you ask the attendant to open up for you. Frankly, you might find that its not worth the climb - the roof is mainly solar panels and the views, except of the nearby bridge, are no better than at ground level.

Travel Information

I`ve been there with a car. No Problem with parking. As long you have a functionel credit or bankcard. In Netherland are just a few parkomats where you can pay cash. And it is strictly recommended to pay the parking. Otherways you are in trouble.
Taxis are very expensive.
It might be easier to take tram 26 to IJburg from the right-hand end of Amsterdam Centraal station. The tram leaves from the rear of the building. You can see Sluishuis from the tram. Press the button to alight as you pass over the white bridge shown in these pics. There are plenty of trams in both directions.
