Netherlands Rijksmuseum Library, Amsterdam

The Rijksmuseum Library in Amsterdam is the largest and oldest art historical library in the Netherlands. Located within the Rijksmuseum, it features a stunning 19th-century reading room with cast-iron balconies and towering bookshelves filled with rare books, prints, and journals. The space is open to visitors and scholars, offering a quiet retreat and a unique view into the world of art research.

Photography Tips

Photograph the Rijksmuseum Library during daylight to capture the natural light streaming through the high windows, which highlights the architectural details and book spines. Use a wide-angle lens to emphasize the height and depth of the space. A tripod helps in low light but may not be allowed, so steady your camera on a ledge if needed. Focus on symmetry from the main viewing balcony, and experiment with vertical framing to convey the grandeur of the towering shelves.
Be quiet, and you can take pictures.
You'll be asked to check in any large bags (it's free) before entering. They don't mind cameras, but I'm not sure about tripods. This means you're up for hand-held, meaning higher ISO (I had to use 6400 to get reasonable shutter speeds). Again, ultra-wide angle if you have one.

Travel Information

The entry is free if you're under 18. From 1-Jan-19, adult admission is €19 each.
There are several trams (lines 2 and 5) direct from the central station, but it is only about 15 15-minute walk from Dam Square.
