The canal took its name from the many beer breweries that were to be found in this neighborhood in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Typacal for this canal are the many warehouses, built for the storage of goods and in use far into the 20th century.
Nowadays, these warehouses have been converted into residential houses.
No other city in Europe has that many warehouses because of the trade spirit of the city.
