Netherlands Nieuwe Markt, Zwolle

The streets around the Nieuwe Markt in Zwolle are ideal for photographing the city's historic character. From this position, the street leads directly toward the Sassenpoort, Zwolle’s only surviving medieval city gate. The gate probably dates from around 1409 and is one of the most recognizable remnants of the city’s medieval fortifications.

What I particularly like about this view is that the Sassenpoort is not photographed in isolation. The surrounding brick façades, curved street and shop windows make it feel much more like a scene from everyday Zwolle.

I took this photo in the early morning hours, which I would definitely recommend for this part of Zwolle. During the day, these streets become considerably busier, while early in the morning you can photograph almost empty streets and create much cleaner compositions.

A standard to short telephoto focal length works really well here. Moving farther back allows you to use the curve of the street and façades as natural leading lines toward the Sassenpoort. The soft morning light also creates a nice contrast between the cool ambient light outside and the warm illumination from the shop windows.

The Nieuwe Markt lies right in Zwolle’s compact historic center, only a short walk from the Grote Markt. From here, follow the streets toward Sassenstraat and the Sassenpoort; the gate stands at Sassenstraat 53.

For photography, I recommend exploring the entire area on foot rather than heading straight to the main landmarks. Early morning is particularly worthwhile because the shopping streets and squares are still quiet, making it much easier to find unobstructed perspectives like this one.
