Photography Tips

The West Coast offers a lot by way of light and mood. The weather can also change rapidly. This angle enables you to catch the setting sun on the sea side of Lion Rock, which otherwise is in shadow if shooting from the beach.

Travel Information

The view is taken from Taitomo Island which actually is an island at low tide, so plan wisely! Also, be very careful of the sea as the area is notorious for rips and big waves. Taitomo Island, itself, is accessible from South Piha Beach, which is about 45 minutes from central Auckland. It's about a 15 minute walk up to the spot, so make sure you give yourself enough time to get down if shooting late in the day. The closest parking is on Marine Parade South.
