The famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing ist a must do in New Zealand. This volcanic landscape was the inspiration for Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings and is totally different to many other places in New Zealand.

Photography Tips

Use the blue hour light and place a person for scale before Mount Doom with a headlamp. This gives the scenery a little extra. The person should stay stable without any movements. Than its easier for you to reduce your shutter speed in low light conditions.

Travel Information

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19.4km point to point hike. I would prefer to do it for sunrise. Tip: Park at the marked point way before sunrise and hike up to the top of the red crater. You can stay with your car here for 4 hours and the first supervisor are just coming after sunrise. Therefore it's enough time to hike back in time before you exceed the 4 hours because nobody can control it since when you are standing there.
