The summit of Taranaki is at around 2518 meter the second highest mountain of the north island and offers absolutely stunning views in all directions. The stratovolcano is a very challenging hike but so worth it to climb.

Photography Tips

Wait until the sunset light sets in and use a second person for scale. Make sure you bring your headlamp with you for the decent afterwards.

Travel Information

Generally considered a highly challenging route, it should only be attempted by experienced hikers. Please ask at the visitor center about open and possible routes to the peak. We have chosen the route via Syme Hut. This was very difficult with some climbing passages and very steep scree ramps.

Not recommended in bad weather, as it is easy to lose your bearings in the fog.

If winter of snow sets in, please always inform the DOC about the ascent and ask for the current conditions / avalanche risks.
