The Karangahake Gorge 1km tunnel forms part of the Hauraki Rail Trail, in the section that is between Paroa and Waihi. Suitable for hikers and bicycles alike it's a fab day out and suitable in all weathers, as long as you are dressed appropriately.

Photography Tips

The tunnel is dark so a tripod is recommended to get the best shot. However the tunnel is narrow so if using a tripod best to do it when it's not so busy, early morning for instance.

Travel Information

NZ State Highway runs through the Karangahake Gorge and there is parking available at the tunnel entrance. There is also a steam train experience, gold mine sites and museum and other walks to do in the Karangahake Gorge, well worth a visit.
