New Zealand Alex Knob Hiking Views
The Alex Knob Track is one of New Zealand's premier day hikes, climbing from lush West Coast rainforest to open alpine ridges with spectacular panoramic views of Franz Josef Glacier, the Southern Alps, and on clear days Aoraki / Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Along the way, scenic viewpoints such as Rātā Lookout and Christmas Lookout provide ever-improving vistas before the breathtaking summit panorama.
Photography Tips
Along the way up, always make sure to also turn around, not just facing the majestic mountain since to the other side, there is always view openings towards the outflows.
Travel Information
The trail begins near Fox Glacier Village at the Alex Knob/Lake Wombat car park, about a 5-minute drive from the village. The return hike covers approximately 17.2 km (10.7 mi), takes around 8 hours, and gains about 1,100 m (3,610 ft) in elevation, making it a challenging hike best attempted in good weather with an early start, as cloud often obscures the summit by afternoon.
