New Zealand Godley Hut

Godley Hut is a remote backcountry hut located in the spectacular Godley Valley at the northern end of Lake Tekapo. Surrounded by braided rivers, expansive tussock grasslands, and the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps, it serves as a base for hikers, climbers, and adventurers exploring one of New Zealand's most rugged alpine landscapes.

Photography Tips

Classic composition. Maybe frame the hut with some rare grass around. It's also a perfect spot to go stargaizing since there is no light pollution at all.

For that: Using a super wide angle lens, a tripod, and a long exposure with a high ISO allows you to capture the galaxy's intricate details and vibrant star fields. I would recommend never go over 20s of exposure since stars can start moving in your frame.

Travel Information

Getting here is not easy. There is no road leading there and you need to cross several rivers with a 4x4 car or hike all the way in. It took us 7 hours of off-road driving and then another 1,5 hours of hiking. Access is generally via Lilybank Road at the end of Lake Tekapo. If the river levels are too high, please turn around and dont get yourself in danger.
