New Zealand Sefton Bivouac (Window Views)

Sefton Bivouac is a tiny emergency-style alpine shelter perched high above the Mueller Glacier in
Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. Surrounded by towering icefalls, steep rock faces, and the dramatic peaks of Mount Sefton and Aoraki / Mount Cook, it offers one of the most spectacular high-alpine settings in New Zealand and is often used by climbers and experienced mountaineers.

Exposure for the outside since shadows can be recovered. If your camera is not capable of managing such a high dynamic range, take 2 photos, one exposing for the highlights and one for the shadows. Then, compose them together later in post.

Get there early due to rising popularity. Since 2 years (as of 2026) the few spots in the shelter fill out in the mornings.
