New Zealand Heather Jock Hut Hike

The hike to Heather Jock Hut is a rewarding alpine journey through the historic Whakaari Conservation Area, following old scheelite mining roads, passing restored miners' huts, and climbing through open tussock country with spectacular views over Glenorchy, the Dart Valley, and Mount Earnslaw. The final ascent zigzags steeply up the mountainside to the tiny three-bunk hut, perched high above the valley in a dramatic alpine setting.

The hike starts at the Whakaari Conservation Area car park, about 2 km south of Glenorchy on the Queenstown–Glenorchy Road. The return hike is approximately 17 km, takes 7–8 hours, and includes around 1,000 m (3,280 ft) of elevation gain, making it a moderately strenuous day hike or an excellent overnight adventure.
