Portugal Batalha Monastery, Courtyard of the Unfinished Chapels
The Batalha Monastery (Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória) is one of Portugal's most significant Gothic and Manueline architectural achievements. Located in central Portugal, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was built to commemorate the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota, a victory that secured Portuguese independence from Castile.
Construction started in the last 1300s directed by the Portuguese architect Afonso Domingues who followed a Gothic style that is visible also in the big cathedrals in France. By the time work stopped in the early 1500s, it has employed a succession of 7 functional architects to deliver a Gothic masterpiece. At that point, there was still an area of unfinished chapels with no roof, it remains open to the sky.
In the 1960s, local authorities cleared away the little shops and buildings cluttering the area, making it easier to see and enjoy the building itself.
In 2026, work was underway to clean the exterior of the building.

Photography Tips
At 9:00 in the morning, the coaches disgorge lots of tourists into the area, most of whom head directly inside. By afternoon, the crowds have thinned and, in spots like the unfinished chapels, the light is probably better.
Inside the whole monastery, tripods are not permitted; you're stuck with higher ISOs, image stabilisation and noise reduction software.

Travel Information
There isn't a lot to draw you to Batalha so you might want to consider staying at Hotel Lis Batalha, which is just across the courtyard from the monastery. If offers free parking right in front of the hotel and its very convenient if you want to photograph when the monastery is lit up at night.
