The Dom Luís I Bridge sweeps across the Douro, linking Porto’s Ribeira to Vila Nova de Gaia with a soaring double-deck iron arch. Designed by the engineer Téophile Seyrig, it presents an elegant lattice of riveted steel that curves in a single, commanding span between granite abutments. The upper deck carries the metro and walkers high above the river, where views open to terracotta roofs, church towers and the meandering waterway. Below, a second deck sits closer to the quays, connecting lively riverfront promenades lined with rabelos, cafés and wine lodges.

From the river, the arch reads as a delicate filigree; up close, the structure reveals a muscular rhythm of ribs, gussets and rivets that catch the Atlantic light. Painted in a muted grey-blue, it complements the warm stone and colourful façades around it. At dusk, the bridge glows as the city lamps flicker on, and the Douro mirrors the arc in shimmering reflections. More than a crossing, the Luís I Bridge functions as a civic stage: musicians busk, commuters glide by, and visitors pause to take in the sweep of the valley. It embodies Porto’s character—practical, resilient and quietly dramatic.
