Portugal Elevador da Bica
The Elevador da Bica (or Ascensor da Bica) is one of four historical funiculars in the streets of Lisbon, Portugal. It was opened for the public in 1892 and became a national monument in 2002. The funicular connects between Calçada do Combro/Rua do Loreto and the Rua de S. Paulo.
Photography Tips
This photograph was taken towards the lower terminus (the yellow building in the background).
Taking photos there is a bit dangerous, because the funicular operates as a two-way-system. While the lower carriage heads up hill the higher carriage does its way down dale. The main rail is a single track so you should always keep an eye on what is happening around you if you are standing on the track like me for this shot.
For the best results you should go there during the day, because you will need all the light you can get.
The reason for this is that the surrounding buildings swallow a lot of the light.
You will also have to keep in mind that the carriage is moving. So you cannot shoot with a shutter speed under a certain level if you want your pictures to be sharp. And have an eye on your ISO. Your ISO will raise when there is not enough light. In case of this you have to try how your camera can handle low light situations and noises in the picture.
