The volcanic sea stacks rising from the Atlantic are what make Praia dos Mosteiros one of the most recognizable coastal landscapes on São Miguel. Known as the Ilhéus dos Mosteiros, these dramatic remnants of volcanic rock sit just offshore, constantly exposed to the powerful Atlantic swell.

This telephoto perspective puts the focus entirely on the two largest formations. Compressing the distance makes the stacks feel even more monumental, while the layers of breaking waves emphasize just how exposed this western coastline of São Miguel really is.

Photography Tips

There are many rocks along the coastline that you can use as foreground for a long-exposure shot. Otherwise, the best way is to shoot people standing on the higher rock just between the two big reefs. Golden hour before sunset is the best time for this spot.

A telephoto lens is perfect for Praia dos Mosteiros. While wider compositions can include the black volcanic beach and surrounding coastline, a longer focal length isolates individual sea stacks and creates much more graphic compositions.

The waves are an important part of the image, so rather than waiting for completely calm conditions, look for moments when large swells break directly against the rocks. Using a relatively fast shutter speed freezes the spray and preserves the texture of the turbulent Atlantic.

The location also works particularly well for vertical compositions. Stacking the dark volcanic foreground, white surf, towering rocks, and open sky creates several distinct layers and gives the formations a much stronger sense of scale.

Travel Information

Praia dos Mosteiros lies on the western coast of São Miguel, close to the village of Mosteiros. The beach is known for its black volcanic sand, rugged lava formations and views toward the offshore islets.

The western orientation also makes Mosteiros an excellent sunset location. For photography, it is worth exploring different positions along the shoreline rather than staying in one place—the appearance and separation of the sea stacks changes considerably depending on your angle.

On days with powerful Atlantic swell, keep well away from exposed rocks and the waterline, as waves can reach much farther onto the volcanic shore than expected.
