The Arquipélago – Contemporary Arts Center maintains the industrial character of the initial complex, in a dialogue between the existing building (former alcohol factory) – where the exhibition rooms, library, administrative services are located – and new buildings (reserves and blackbox, workshops, artistic residences). The architectural project won national and international awards. It is an institution that reflects on the world in which it exists, also shaped by the context in which it is inserted. Mediating what an arts center is, dismantling contemporary art and its relationship with audiences, providing tools to these audiences, has been the basis of its institutional work. Programmatically, it has tried to create an understanding of its institutional activity and give an increasingly active role to mediation.
