Inside the oldest part, facing a staircase, is a stained-glass window with the figure of King Manuel I. At its base is the crown of the old Municipal Pillory. Also noteworthy in its magnificent Main Hall are tile panels that evoke themes of Ribeira Grande's labor and expression: watermills, the cavalcades of Saint Peter, the Holy Spirit, the tea industry, the municipal coat of arms, still from the time of the constitutional monarchy, and Gaspar Frutuoso, by Jorge Rei Colaço, from 1936.

In 1984, the City Hall building was declared a Property of Public Interest. Admittedly, the City Hall occupies a prominent place in the city's historic center.

The original Town Hall has disappeared. Were they built in the Manueline style? Some of the current buildings, which according to Jorge Gamboa de Vasconcelos date back to the early 17th century, consist of a ground floor (formerly a municipal jail) and two floors. Outside, one can see a rich staircase, a balcony, and pyramids above the main door, an aesthetic detail of so-called "plain" architecture.

The arch and bell tower were built in the late 18th century, curiously enough to house the jailer and prisoners, as well as the municipal bells and clock.

Photography Tips

Lots of culture, paintings alluding to the experiences of the Azorean people as well as those in the diaspora spread across the world. Many exhibitions throughout the year. Lots of people, especially tourists visiting the Azores. It is a mandatory stop to get to know Azorean culture up close.

There's not much to invent, the best way to get around São Miguel (or any other island in the Azores) is by car.
