Portugal The Big Water Hole
This spot features an impressive funnel-shaped (or tulip-shaped) spillway located at the Monte da Rocha Reservoir. Completed in 1972, this rock-fill dam on the Sado River provides water for irrigation and public supply. The concrete “eye” sucks excess water into an underground tunnel, creating a mesmerizing visual effect that attracts photographers from across the country, especially when the water begins to overflow into it.
Photography Tips
Best Time: Dawn or sunset offers dramatic colors in the sky that reflect off the calm water’s surface, creating a contrast with the dark “void” of the spillway.
Technique: Use long exposures with ND (Neutral Density) filters to soften the texture of the water and give it a mirror-like or silky appearance, as seen in Rui Fonseca’s photo.
Composition: Use the dam wall or the concrete structures in the foreground as leading lines to guide the eye toward the spillway.
Equipment: A tripod is essential for long exposures. A wide-angle lens helps capture the vastness of the reservoir and the grandeur of the structure.
