Portugal Felgueiras Lighthouse
Rising defiantly against the impetuous waves of the Atlantic, the Felgueiras Lighthouse is an imposing granite sentinel at the mouth of the Douro River. Its hexagonal tower, approximately ten metres high, had its construction begun in 1790 and officially became a lighthouse in 1886. This photograph captures a moment of powerful waves, when enormous walls of white foam erupt behind the historic structure, engulfing it in the fury of the ocean. In the background, the striped tower of another lighthouse frames the other side of the frame, creating a dramatic dialogue between both maritime structures as they face the relentless sea. Now an emblematic tourist attraction, the composition highlights the stark contrast between the solid stone and the chaotic energy of the sea. It serves as a powerful reminder of the delicate balance between human architecture and the relentless forces of nature.
Photography Tips
• Lighthouse #79 (2014), Portugal
• Nikon D800, 70-200/2.8 • Iso 400 • 200mm • f/10 • 1/640sec
A telephoto lens helps compress the perspective and isolate the lighthouse against the rough sea, emphasising both the scale of the waves and the drama of the scene. Use a fast shutter speed to freeze the motion of the water and retain detail in the spray, particularly during periods of strong sea conditions.
A tight composition removes distractions and focuses attention on the relationship between the two lighthouses and the power of the ocean. The most striking images are often captured during storms or high tides, always from a safe position and with full awareness of sea conditions. Side light at sunrise or sunset is ideal, as it textures the massive walls of water and makes the white foam stand out sharply against the sky.
