Portugal Low tide in Carrasqueira
Patience is the defining element of this composition, as we had to wait a considerable amount of time for the tide to recede and reveal what was hidden beneath the surface. Only at the precise moment of low tide do the discarded tyres emerge in the foreground, allowing for better framing and creating a guiding line that leads the eye toward the abandoned boat. Located near the iconic Palafitic Pier of Carrasqueira, in the Sado River estuary, this is one of the most photogenic and evocative locations in the region. The receding water transforms the landscape, and we begin to see what was hidden. Under the soft, diffused light of the estuary, the photograph attempts to capture a strikingly beautiful balance amidst the persistent and rhythmic flow of the Sado.
Photography Tips
• Low tide #75 (2013)
• Nikon D800, 24-70/2.8 • Iso 400 • 60mm • f/18 • 30sec
Using a focal length close to the standard range helps maintain a natural and balanced perspective, highlighting the relationship between the stilt pier, the water channels and the surrounding landscape. A small aperture helps ensure extensive depth of field and facilitates the use of long exposures. In this case, the 30-second exposure transforms the surface of the water into a smooth and uniform area, creating a more serene and minimalist atmosphere. During low tide, look for the lines, patterns and geometric shapes created by the wooden structures and the estuary channels. The soft light of sunrise or sunset helps reveal the textures of the landscape and reinforces the sense of tranquillity within the scene.

Travel Information
Approximate coordinates identified by the photographer:
38.4159550, -8.7500200
The site is easily reached via the village of Carrasqueira by following the signs to the Palafitic Pier. The access road is paved and suitable for cars, vans and motorhomes. A free parking area is located just a short walk from the pier. Motorhomes can usually park without difficulty, although space may be limited at sunset, during weekends and in the peak tourist season. When I visited the site, no motorhome services, water supply or waste disposal facilities were available. The location can be visited throughout the year.
