Portugal Carrasqueira Palafitic Pier

Taken at Carrasqueira, on the Sado Estuary, this photograph portrays one of Portugal’s most distinctive wooden structures. Built by local fishermen in the mid-twentieth century, the Palafitic Pier stretches across the shallow waters through an irregular network of stilts and walkways, shaped by necessity rather than design.

The Palafitic Pier of Carrasqueira is located near the village of Carrasqueira, within the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve. The site is accessible via a paved road suitable for cars, vans and motorhomes. Free parking is available nearby, followed by a short walk to the wooden structures. Access to the pier is free of charge. At the time the photograph was taken, no motorhome service facilities were available on site. However, cafés, restaurants, and small local shops can be found in the surrounding villages. The pier can be visited throughout the year and generally offers good access in all seasons.
