Praia da Samoqueira is one of the most visually stunning and raw beaches along the Alentejo coastline. This spot is famous for its dramatic rocky islets, craggy sea stacks, and high cliffs that carve out small, intimate sandy bays. Taken from an elevated clifftop perspective, this photo captures the beautiful contrast between the jagged dark rocks, the smooth golden sand, and the dynamic cloud formations painted by the setting sun. Photographers and nature lovers should visit this spot to capture the untamed, wild beauty of the Atlantic Ocean and the unique geological structures that define the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.

Photography Tips

To capture this exact frame, head to the clifftop trails directly overlooking the beach before sunset. A wide-angle lens (16-35mm on a full-frame sensor) is perfect for capturing the sweeping expanse of the coastline, the sky, and the foreground vegetation simultaneously. Timing is critical: shooting during the golden hour provides warm, soft light that brings out the texture of the rocks and the golden hues of the sand. If you want to create a silky, smooth effect on the waves washing around the rock formations, use a neutral density (ND) filter and a sturdy tripod for a long exposure. Keep an eye on the tides, as low tide reveals more sand patterns and complex rock textures.

Travel Information

Praia da Samoqueira is located just a few minutes north of the village of Porto Covo. It is easily reachable by car via the M554 coastal road. There is a dedicated dirt parking lot located just above the cliffs, making it a very short walk to the clifftop vantage points. To access the actual sand, there are carved stone staircases leading down the cliffside. The spot is highly accessible, but exercise extreme caution when walking close to the cliff edges for photos, as the ground can be unstable.
