This spectacular spot features the Farol do Cabo Raso, a historic 13-meter-tall red metallic lighthouse built in 1894 and uniquely built inside the stone walls of the 17th-century Fort of São Brás de Sanxete. Located on the rugged, wind-swept Atlantic coastline of Cascais, it offers a stark visual contrast between the clean white buildings, the vibrant red tower, and the raw power of the ocean. Photographers should visit this spot to capture dramatic, dramatic marine landscapes where massive ocean swells crash heavily against the dark, sharp volcanic rock formations.

Photography Tips

This location is a premier destination for sunset photography, as the sun dips directly into the Atlantic Ocean right in front of the lighthouse. A wide-angle lens (16-35mm) is essential if you want to include both the expansive rocky coastline and the architectural layout of the fort in a single frame. To capture the raw movement of the waves crashing against the rocks, use a fast shutter speed (1/500s or faster), or switch to a tripod and a 3-stop to 6-stop ND filter to create a moody, long-exposure texture with the ocean foam. If shooting with a drone, always check local air restrictions, and fly with extreme caution due to the consistently high and unpredictable coastal winds

Travel Information

Farol do Cabo Raso is located roughly 6.5 kilometers west of the center of Cascais along the scenic N247 coastal road. The easiest way to get there is by car or bicycle, following the dedicated coastal bike path from Guincho or Cascais. Free gravel parking space is available directly on-site on the dirt clearing next to the fort walls. Alternatively, you can take public transportation using the local MOBI Cascais line 15 bus from the main Cascais train station, which stops right outside the landmark. There is also a restaurant nearby for food and restrooms.
