Portugal Casa de Leonte Forest Guard House

This spot features the charming Casa de Leonte, a traditional stone house built in the first half of the 20th century to serve as a quarters for forest guards. It bears the distinct oval ceramic badge with the acronym M.N. (Matas Nacionais, or National Forests). Located at an altitude of approximately 862 meters along a high mountain pass, the building is elegantly framed by towering cedar and birch trees, with the steep granite peaks of the Peneda-Gerês National Park rising dramatically in the background. It is a wonderful location for capturing fairytale-like architecture embedded in deep Portuguese wilderness, especially when autumn turns the surrounding foliage into gold.

To photograph Casa de Leonte effectively, use a standard zoom lens (24-70mm) to balance the structure of the house with the dramatic scale of the granite mountain tops behind it. The best time to shoot is during the morning or late afternoon when the low sun casts long, directional shadows through the large trees, creating a beautifully mooded, woodland atmosphere. Pay close attention to your framing; including the massive conifer branches on the right side helps add depth and creates a natural frame leading the eye to the masonry details of the house. Autumn is by far the most colorful season, bringing a striking contrast between the green evergreen needles, orange deciduous leaves, and grey stone walls.

Reaching this spot is incredibly easy as it sits directly next to the tarmac on the M513 / N308-1 mountain pass highway that connects Vila do Gerês to Portela do Homem (the Spanish border). There is a free unpaved dirt parking area right in front of the house and along the roadside clearings. Because this house marks the official trailhead for famous hikes like the climb to Pé de Cabril or Pico Borrageiro, parking spots can fill up very quickly during sunny weekends or holidays, so arriving early is highly advised.
