Portugal Caminho das Lombas, Azores Islands
Caminho das Lombas is a perfect example of what makes the more remote corners of the Azores so special. Narrow tracks wind through intensely green pastures divided by traditional stone walls, while the land suddenly drops into rugged volcanic cliffs and the Atlantic stretches out below. From the air, the contrast between the geometric farmland and the wild coastline becomes especially impressive. And this one is pretty much the coolest parking lot I have seen so far!
Photography Tips
A drone is the ideal way to photograph this coastline, as many of its shapes and layers are difficult to appreciate from ground level. I particularly like including a vehicle in compositions like this – it provides a sense of scale and turns an otherwise pure landscape image into more of a road-trip scene. Side light works beautifully here, illuminating individual fields and cliff faces while leaving others in shadow. Changeable weather can actually be an advantage, as moving clouds constantly create new patches of light across the landscape.
Travel Information
Caminho das Lombas is best explored slowly, following the smaller roads and tracks through the coastal landscape rather than simply driving between the main sights. Some sections can be narrow, uneven, or muddy after rain, so consider road conditions before continuing in a rental car. Allow some extra time for spontaneous stops – the views along this coastline are often the highlight rather than one specific viewpoint. As elsewhere in the Azores, conditions can change quickly, particularly along exposed cliffs, and you should always check current local restrictions before flying a drone.
