Portugal Moinho river, Flores, Azores Islands

Close to Farol do Albarnaz on the northern coast of Flores, the Moinho River creates one of those landscapes that almost looks too perfectly arranged to be real. The river cuts through the intensely green patchwork of fields before suddenly dropping over the dark volcanic cliffs directly towards the Atlantic. Combined with the stone walls, rough ocean, and changing Azorean light, it is one of my favorite kinds of landscapes on Flores: wild coastline meeting cultivated land.

This location really comes alive from the air. Flying out over the Atlantic and looking back toward the island lets you place the waterfall in the center while using the river as a natural leading line through the fields behind it. The traditional stone walls add another layer of patterns to the composition.

Changing weather can be a huge advantage here. Wait for gaps in the clouds – even a few seconds of sunlight can illuminate individual fields while the cliffs remain dark, creating much more depth than completely clear skies.

The Moinho River is in northwestern Flores, not far from Farol do Albarnaz, making it easy to combine both locations while exploring this remote corner of the island. The surrounding roads pass through beautiful agricultural landscapes and are worth driving slowly, with plenty of views along the way.

This part of Flores is very exposed to the Atlantic, so strong winds and rapidly changing weather are common. That is particularly important when flying a drone: conditions at your take-off point can feel calm while winds above the cliffs or farther out over the ocean are considerably stronger.
