Portugal Pico Dona Joana, Terceira, Azores
The landscape around Pico Dona Joana perfectly shows the volcanic character of Terceira. Small volcanic cones rise from an almost endless patchwork of intensely green fields, divided by the characteristic dark stone walls of the Azores. From the air, these geometric patterns become just as important to the image as the volcanic hills themselves.
What makes this perspective particularly beautiful is the combination of the rolling green landscape, the Atlantic in the background, and the small offshore islets, creating several distinct layers within a single frame.

Photography Tips
This location definitely benefits from a drone and a slightly higher perspective. Rather than flying directly above Pico Dona Joana, move away from it and photograph across the landscape. This allows the volcanic cone to become part of a much larger composition.
The stone walls between the fields work as natural leading lines, while the neighboring volcanic hills and ocean create depth toward the horizon.
Late afternoon or early evening light is particularly beautiful here. A low sun emphasizes the shape of the volcanic cones and creates subtle shadows across the fields, making the landscape appear much more three-dimensional.
But be aware of the wind. We had two days, and it was pretty much impossible to fly here without risking your drone!

Travel Information
Pico Dona Joana is on Terceira, and the surrounding countryside is worth exploring beyond this viewpoint. Small roads cross the agricultural landscape, making it easy to stop at different locations and discover new compositions.
This is also a great example of why I wouldn't only focus on Terceira's famous viewpoints. Simply driving through the interior and exploring the smaller roads can reveal some of the island's most photogenic landscapes, especially when viewed from above.
As always in the Azores, keep an eye on the weather. Clouds and sunlight can change within minutes, and those short moments when sunlight breaks through often create the best conditions for photographing these green volcanic landscapes.
