The coastline around Termas da Ferraria shows the volcanic origins of the Azores in one of the most dramatic ways. Black lava formations meet the Atlantic while powerful waves crash against the rocks, creating an incredible contrast between the almost turquoise water, white sea foam, and dark volcanic coast.

From the air, the scale and ruggedness of the landscape become especially visible. The small buildings along the coast almost disappear between the cliffs, lava fields and ocean.

Photography Tips

A drone is perfect for capturing the coastline around Ferraria, particularly when the Atlantic is rough. Instead of focusing only on the thermal pools, fly farther offshore and photograph back towards the island. This allows you to use the breaking waves as a dramatic foreground while showing the volcanic landscape behind them.

A slightly lower drone perspective works particularly well here. It keeps the waves prominent and gives the cliffs much more scale than a classic top-down composition.

Conditions after a storm can produce especially spectacular images, but keep plenty of distance from the waves and cliffs when flying in strong winds.

Travel Information

Termas da Ferraria is located on the western coast of São Miguel, not far from Ponta da Ferraria. The area is famous for its geothermal activity, especially the natural ocean pool where volcanic heat warms the seawater.

If you want to experience the warm water, check the tides before visiting. Around low tide, the geothermal water has a much more noticeable effect, while at high tide the incoming Atlantic water can make the pool considerably cooler.

Even if you're not planning to swim, Ferraria is worth visiting simply for the scenery. The combination of black volcanic rock, enormous Atlantic waves and steep coastal cliffs makes it one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline on São Miguel.
