Portugal Vale das Lombadas, Azores Islands

Hidden in the mountainous interior of São Miguel, Vale das Lombadas feels very different from the island’s more famous volcanic lakes and coastal viewpoints. Dense vegetation covers the steep valley walls while streams cut their way through the landscape, creating one of those places where the Azores feel almost completely wild.

This aerial image was taken near Cascata das Lombadas, looking straight down into the valley as the river winds through the forest. Especially when the vegetation begins to show warmer tones, the combination of deep greens, yellow foliage, and dark volcanic terrain makes this area incredibly photogenic.

A drone is perfect for revealing the scale and structure of Vale das Lombadas. From ground level, dense vegetation can make it hard to see how deeply the streams have carved the landscape.

For compositions like this, look for natural curves in the river and use them as leading lines through the frame. Flying almost directly overhead also helps simplify the scene and turns the forest, water, and vegetation into layers of texture and color.

Cloudy conditions can actually be ideal here. Soft light reduces harsh contrast inside the valley and helps retain details in both the dark forest and brighter vegetation.

Vale das Lombadas lies in the interior of São Miguel, close to the Lagoa do Fogo area, but feels considerably more remote than many of the island’s popular viewpoints.

The area around Cascata das Lombadas is best explored with enough time and appropriate footwear, especially after rainfall when trails and access tracks can become wet and muddy. Conditions can change quickly in São Miguel’s mountainous interior, so don't rely too heavily on the weather you see along the coast.
