Sitting high in the volcanic interior of São Miguel, Lagoa do Fogo is one of the most spectacular crater lakes in the Azores. Its name translates to “Lake of Fire”, a reminder of the volcanic forces that created this enormous caldera, even though today the landscape could hardly look more peaceful.

What makes Lagoa do Fogo particularly beautiful is how untouched it feels. Steep green crater walls surround the intensely blue and turquoise water, while small beaches and forested sections line the shore. In this image, the low clouds drifting across the mountains add another characteristic element of the Azores: weather that can transform a landscape within minutes.

Photography Tips

Lagoa do Fogo is especially photogenic when clouds are moving through the caldera. Instead of waiting exclusively for clear skies, use gaps in the clouds to capture patches of sunlight moving across the lake and surrounding slopes.

A wider focal length works beautifully from these viewpoints because it lets you include the foreground ridges and create depth in the image. A polarizing filter can also help reduce reflections and bring out the turquoise tones of the water.

Because conditions change incredibly quickly at this altitude, give yourself some time. A completely fogged-in view can turn into dramatic light only a few minutes later.

Travel Information

Lagoa do Fogo is located in the center of São Miguel, between Ribeira Grande and the southern coast around Lagoa and Água de Alto. Several viewpoints along the mountain road offer impressive perspectives into the caldera.

During parts of the main tourism season, access by private car can be restricted, and a shuttle system may operate, so it is worth checking the current access regulations before visiting.

For a closer experience, hiking trails lead into the protected landscape around the lake. The weather at Lagoa do Fogo is often considerably cooler, windier,r and cloudier than along the coast, so bring an extra layer even when conditions elsewhere on São Miguel look perfect.
