Just off the southern coast of Terceira, the Ilhéus das Cabras form one of the most striking offshore landmarks in the Azores. The two uninhabited islets are the remains of an ancient volcanic structure, gradually shaped and separated by erosion and the Atlantic's relentless power.

From the air, their volcanic origins become particularly obvious. Steep exposed cliffs contrast beautifully with the surprisingly lush green vegetation covering the upper slopes. In this image, the combination of warm sunlight, deep blue Atlantic water, and scattered clouds gives the island an almost tropical appearance despite its rugged volcanic character.

Photography Tips

The Ilhéus das Cabras are particularly suited to drone photography, as their shape and cliffs are difficult to fully appreciate from the coast. Flying at a lower, more horizontal angle rather than directly overhead emphasizes the cliffs' height and gives the islets a much stronger sense of scale.

Late-afternoon light can work especially well here, illuminating the exposed rock faces while creating stronger contrast between the green vegetation and surrounding ocean. Including some open water around the subject also helps communicate just how isolated these volcanic formations are.

Strong Atlantic winds are common around Terceira, so check both wind direction and your drone's remaining battery carefully before flying far offshore.

Travel Information

The Ilhéus das Cabras lie just off Terceira's southern coast, southeast of Angra do Heroísmo, and can be seen from several coastal viewpoints in this part of the island.

There is no regular road or pedestrian access to the islets themselves. For travelers without a drone, the easiest way to experience them more closely is by boat, with trips operating around Terceira's coastline.

The islets and surrounding waters are also ecologically important, particularly for seabirds. When photographing or flying nearby, keep a respectful distance from wildlife.
