Deep in the forested western side of Terceira, the road around Miradouro da Mata da Serreta feels completely different from the open volcanic landscapes found across much of the Azores. Here, dense vegetation closes in from both sides, with twisted trunks and branches forming an almost natural tunnel above the narrow road.

This image was taken just after a storm, which adds considerably to the atmosphere. Broken branches and leaves cover the wet asphalt, while small patches of light begin to penetrate the canopy again. The combination of darkness, moisture, and warm highlights on the trees gives the road an almost mysterious, cinematic character.

Photography Tips

The strongest element here is the natural tunnel created by the trees, so use the road and its central markings as leading lines drawing the viewer deeper into the forest.

A vertical composition works particularly well because it emphasizes the canopy's height and lets the branches surround the road. After rain or a storm is arguably one of the best times to photograph the area: wet surfaces become darker and richer, while the moisture intensifies the greens and warm tones of the tree trunks.

Slight underexposure can also help preserve the moody atmosphere, rather than trying to brighten every shadow in the forest.

Travel Information

Mata da Serreta is on the western side of Terceira, near the village of Serreta. The forest and surrounding viewpoints make it a worthwhile detour while exploring this quieter part of the island.

The narrow roads through the forest are part of the experience, but conditions can change after bad weather. Following storms or strong winds, expect fallen branches, leaves, and other debris on the road, and drive slowly even if the route remains open.

Fog and rain can make the forest particularly atmospheric, so don't necessarily avoid this area on a cloudy day. Just remember that the combination of wet asphalt, leaves,s and narrow bends can make the road considerably more slippery.
